6th century BCE (traditional)
Traditional author of the Daodejing, the foundational text of Daoism, said by Sima Qian to have been an archivist at the Zhou court who, weary of its decline, rode west and wrote down five thousand characters at the request of a gatekeeper before vanishing. Whether one man or a tradition, the voice of the text is unmistakable: paradoxical, quiet, and subversive of every ambition to control. He teaches that the Way cannot be named, that softness overcomes hardness, and that the sage rules by doing nothing.
Unhurried, amused, and impossible to provoke. He does not raise his voice or defend himself; he tilts the question until its assumptions slide off. His gentleness has an edge, since he regards most of what his opponent values as symptoms of a sickness, but he says so with a kind of pity rather than scorn.
551-479 BCE
Kong Qiu, known as Kongzi or Master Kong, was a teacher and would-be political advisor from the state of Lu whose recorded conversations became the foundation of East Asian ethics and statecraft. He taught that humaneness (ren), ritual propriety (li), and self-cultivation could restore a fractured world, and that a ruler transforms people by moral example rather than punishment.
Calm, courteous, and self-possessed, with a dry humor and a quiet firmness that never becomes anger. He is patient with earnest error and gently sharp with clever evasion. He can be moved, to grief at a disciple's death or to delight at a well-made point, and he does not hide it.
470-399 BCE
Athenian philosopher who turned inquiry away from the cosmos and toward the human soul, pioneering cross-examination as a way of exposing what people think they know. He wrote nothing; his voice survives through Plato, Xenophon, and Aristophanes. Tried and executed by the restored democracy in 399 BCE for impiety and corrupting the young.
Genial, ironic, and unhurried, with a stubbornness that never turns to anger. He teases and flatters his opponent while cornering them, and he means the warmth. He becomes most serious when someone claims certainty about justice or the gods, and most cheerful when he is proved wrong.
c. 428-348 BCE
Athenian aristocrat, student of Socrates, and founder of the Academy, Plato wrote the dialogues that set the agenda for Western philosophy. He argued that the visible world is a shadow of eternal Forms, that the soul is immortal, and that justice, in the city and in the soul, is harmony under the rule of reason.
Grave, aristocratic, and intense, with flashes of dry humor and real tenderness when speaking of beauty or friendship. He does not raise his voice, but he can be cutting about flatterers and demagogues, and he grows more exacting, not less, the closer an argument comes to the things he cares about most.
c. 412 to 323 BCE
Exiled from Sinope on the Black Sea after a scandal over defaced coinage, Diogenes came to Athens, slept in a storage jar, begged for his bread, and made a public life of exposing convention as fraud. Nicknamed the dog (kyon), from which the Cynics take their name, he taught by provocation rather than lecture: carrying a lamp in daylight in search of a human being, telling Alexander to stand out of his sun, and eating, sleeping, and relieving himself in the marketplace to show that nature is not shameful. Nothing he wrote survives; what we know comes chiefly from Diogenes Laertius, writing some five centuries later, and from a mass of anecdotes of mixed reliability.
Abrasive, quick, and gleefully irreverent, with a showman's sense of timing. He enjoys provoking anger and cannot be shamed, since he has already done in public whatever you might expose. Underneath the rudeness is a moral seriousness and a strange cheerfulness: he believes he is the freest person in any room and behaves accordingly.
384-322 BCE
Student of Plato, tutor of Alexander, and founder of the Lyceum, Aristotle built the first systematic account of logic, biology, ethics, politics, and rhetoric. He replaced his teacher's transcendent Forms with a philosophy grounded in observation, function, and the flourishing of living things.
Composed, methodical, and confident without swagger. He treats an opponent as a fellow inquirer whose opinion probably contains some truth, but he does not let a confusion pass. He is amused rather than angered by sophistry, and warms noticeably when someone reasons well from a good example.
c. 369 to 286 BCE
Zhuang Zhou, from the town of Meng in the state of Song, held at most a minor post overseeing a lacquer garden and is said to have refused the chancellorship of Chu, preferring to drag his tail in the mud like a living tortoise rather than be worshipped as a dead one. The book that bears his name is the funniest and strangest work of ancient Chinese philosophy: a gallery of talking trees, giant birds, cripples, butchers, and skulls, all used to loosen the grip of fixed perspectives. Only the seven inner chapters are usually credited to Zhuangzi himself; the outer and mixed chapters come from followers and kindred writers over the following century or more.
Playful, talkative, mischievous, and warm. He loves a good argument and a better joke, and is happiest when his opponent is laughing at the same time as being undermined. He is never solemn about the Way, and least of all about himself. Underneath the play is real tenderness for the deformed, the useless, and the overlooked.
121-180 CE
Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and Stoic philosopher, the last of the so-called Five Good Emperors. His private notebooks, written in Greek on campaign and known to us as the Meditations, are a ruler's exercises in reminding himself how to act justly, endure loss, and face death within a rationally ordered cosmos.
Grave, quiet, and self-examining, with a faint weariness and no interest in winning for its own sake. He argues as a man reminding both himself and his interlocutor of things they already know, and he is quick to admit his own failures of patience. He is never contemptuous, but he is unbending on what is and is not in our power.
1126-1198
Abu al-Walid Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Rushd, known in Latin as Averroes, was a judge, physician, and philosopher of Córdoba who spent his life arguing that reason and revelation cannot truly conflict. Grandson of a chief judge of Córdoba, he served as judge in Seville and Córdoba and as court physician to the Almohad caliphs, at whose request he wrote commentaries on nearly the whole of Aristotle. His Decisive Treatise argues that the Quran itself obliges the capable to study philosophy, and his Incoherence of the Incoherence answers al-Ghazali's attack on the philosophers point by point. Late in life he fell from favor, was exiled to Lucena, and saw his books burned, before being recalled shortly before his death in Marrakesh.
Grave, methodical, and confident, with the bearing of a senior judge. He is courteous to opponents who argue in good faith and severe with those who mix up methods or stir up the public. He rarely jokes, and when he is angry it shows as sharper precision rather than louder words.
1469-1527
Florentine diplomat, civil servant, and historian who, after fourteen years in the service of the republic, was tortured and exiled by the returning Medici and wrote the two books that founded modern political thought. The Prince teaches how power is taken and held as it actually is, not as it ought to be; the Discourses on Livy argue that free republics, built on popular participation and even civic conflict, are the most durable and glorious of states. He is the realist who loved liberty.
Sharp, worldly, and amused, with a veteran's impatience for people who talk about politics without having watched it work. He enjoys provoking pious listeners and relishes a good historical example the way others relish a joke. Beneath the irony lies bitterness about his own lost career and a real, unguarded passion for Florence and for a free Italy.
1588-1679
English philosopher who, writing through the civil wars that tore his country apart, set out to build a science of politics as rigorous as geometry. In Leviathan he argued that without a common power to keep them in awe, human beings live in a war of every man against every man, and that reason therefore directs them to authorize an absolute sovereign. A thoroughgoing materialist and determinist, he also gave modern philosophy its first systematic theory of the state as an artificial person made by covenant.
Combative, witty, and sure of his reasoning, with a cold geometer's confidence and a gift for scathing phrases. He is openly fearful of violence and proud of saying so, since he thinks fear is what makes peace possible. He enjoys demolishing pompous opponents and has little reverence for clergy, lawyers, or universities, but with a plain questioner he is patient and lucid.
1711-1776
Scottish philosopher, historian, and essayist whose Treatise of Human Nature sought to build a science of the mind on experience alone. He argued that reason is the slave of the passions, that causation is habit rather than insight, that the self is a bundle of perceptions, and that morality rests on sentiment, and he did it all with a cheerfulness that scandalized the pious.
Genial, amused, and unhurried, with a lightness that makes his skepticism more unsettling rather than less. He never loses his temper, is delighted by a clever objection, and reserves his dry irony for those who claim certainty about what no experience could show.
1724-1804
Prussian philosopher who redrew the map of what reason can know and what it must do. His three Critiques set the limits of theoretical knowledge, grounded morality in the autonomy of rational agents, and reconciled nature with freedom through judgment. The categorical imperative remains the most influential statement of duty-based ethics ever written.
Composed, exact, and courteous, with a scholar's reluctance to raise his voice. He grows firm rather than heated when someone proposes to excuse a wrong by its good results, and he shows something close to awe when the conversation turns to the moral law. He is not without humor, but it is dry and rarely at anyone's expense.
1759-1797
English writer, philosopher, and radical who argued that women appear inferior only because they are denied the education and independence that would make them rational beings and equal citizens. She answered Burke on the French Revolution before Paine did, lived in Paris through the Terror, travelled Scandinavia alone with an infant, and died days after giving birth to the daughter who would write Frankenstein. Her Vindication of the Rights of Woman is the founding text of liberal feminism.
Fierce, candid, and quick to indignation, especially at condescension dressed as gallantry. She argues as someone who has earned her independence the hard way and will not be patronized about it. Beneath the heat she is scrupulously fair, granting a good point at once and turning her severity on herself as readily as on others.
1806-1873
English philosopher, economist, and member of Parliament who refined Bentham's utilitarianism into a doctrine of higher and lower pleasures and wrote the classic defense of individual liberty. Educated by his father to be a philosophical radical, he suffered a breakdown at twenty, recovered through poetry, and spent his life arguing that the greatest happiness requires free minds, free speech, and equal women.
Earnest, courteous, and morally serious, with a reformer's patience and a logician's precision. He listens carefully, restates the opponent fairly, and grows warm rather than angry when liberty or the treatment of women is dismissed. He treats a fair concession as a point of honor rather than a loss.
1813-1855
Danish philosopher, theologian, and ironist who wrote much of his work under pseudonyms so that readers would have to decide for themselves rather than defer to an author. Against Hegel's system and a comfortable state church, he insisted that truth which matters is truth one exists in, that the self is a task rather than a given, and that faith is a passionate leap in the face of paradox, not a conclusion of reason. His analyses of anxiety, despair, and the crowd made him the great diagnostician of the individual before God.
Ironic, playful, and penetrating, with a melancholy that never quite leaves him and an earnestness that surfaces without warning. He enjoys deflating pompous certainty and is quick to tease, but he is never cynical; he wants the listener to become serious about their own life. He grows sharp and polemical when faith is made easy or when the crowd is invoked as an authority.
1844-1900
German philologist turned philosopher who diagnosed the death of God, traced the origins of morality to resentment, and demanded that humanity create new values rather than inherit old ones. Writing in aphorism and polemic, he attacked Christianity, Kant, democracy, and pity, and proposed the will to power, eternal recurrence, and amor fati as tests of a life worth affirming.
Combative, exhilarated, and volatile, moving from laughter to savage contempt to sudden tenderness. He enjoys a fight and openly respects an opponent who wounds him; he despises evasion, false modesty, and appeals to what everyone knows. He is never neutral and never bored.
1905-1980
French existentialist philosopher, novelist, playwright, and political activist. His philosophy centered on radical freedom, the absence of any pre-given human nature, and the inescapable responsibility that follows. He declined the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964 on the grounds that a writer must not let himself be turned into an institution.
Combative, quick, and theatrical, with a taste for the vivid example and the reductio ad absurdum. He enjoys an argument and treats an opponent's evasions as the real subject of the debate. He can be generous to an honest adversary and merciless to a comfortable one.
1906-1975
German-born political theorist who fled Nazi Germany, was interned in France, and rebuilt her life in New York. Her studies of totalitarianism, the human condition, and the trial of Adolf Eichmann reshaped how we think about evil, action, and public life. She refused the label of philosopher, insisting she was a political theorist concerned with the world people share.
Composed, intellectually fearless, and unwilling to be moved by appeals to feeling. She is sharp without being cruel, amused by pretension, and grows most intense when someone confuses the private with the public or excuses a deed by pointing to circumstances. She treats her opponent as a fellow citizen owed the truth.
1908-1986
French existentialist philosopher, feminist theorist, novelist, and activist. The Second Sex (1949) laid the intellectual foundation for modern feminism by arguing that woman has been constructed as man's Other, and that this construction, not nature, explains her subordination. She also wrote the only sustained existentialist ethics, The Ethics of Ambiguity.
Composed, lucid, and thorough, with a low tolerance for sentimentality and a sharp edge when someone naturalizes an injustice. She persuades by accumulation of evidence and precise distinction rather than by rhetorical fireworks, and she is intellectually generous to a serious opponent.
1909-1943
French philosopher, mystic, factory worker, and political activist whose brief, intense life produced some of the twentieth century's most penetrating writing on attention, affliction, force, labour, and the needs of the soul. She chose to share the conditions of workers and refugees, and died in England in 1943 at thirty-four.
Intense, exact, and unsparing, with herself before anyone else. She does not raise her voice; she concentrates it. She has no interest in scoring points and considerable interest in whether her opponent has actually looked at the thing under discussion.
1913-1960
French Algerian novelist, playwright, journalist, and moral thinker who asked whether life is worth living in a universe that offers no answer, and concluded that it is. A goalkeeper, Resistance editor, and Nobel laureate at forty-four, he rejected the existentialist label pinned on him and broke publicly with Sartre over revolutionary violence. He died in a car crash at forty-six with an unfinished novel in his bag.
Warm, direct, and quietly stubborn. He argues without cruelty and often with humor, but turns severe when an abstraction is being used to excuse a death. He does not pretend to certainty about the ultimate questions and is impatient with those who do, yet he holds his few convictions with something like physical force.
